Why does everyone believe that socialism is trying to "force" people to agreeing with it?

We aren't planning on storming the gates of the white house or putting guns to anyone's head to get them to pay their taxes, we are trying to gain support by persuasion and convincing, not by force. We want you to want to help others, not force you to.
