Why are humans similar to herd animals?

We all do have ;the herding instinct'. One example;- If you park your vehicle in an obscure part of an empty car park and leave it for a while you will find on your return that every other driver will have parked beside,or at least close to you leaving the more convenient areas free. I suppose it's the 'safety in numbers' survival instinct kicking in.
